Host a Bible Reading Book Club During Lent!

Host a Bible Reading Book Club During Lent!

Lent is a time to prepare our hearts, minds, and spirit for Easter and reflect on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. You may choose to break a bad habit, like spending too much time on Facebook. Or, you might give up a favorite food or drink, like chocolate or Diet Coke.

Those are great ways to practice self-discipline and model Christ’s sacrifice, but instead of just focusing on breaking bad routines, what if you also tried to build a good routine during the Lenten season and got closer to God’s Word in the process?

Bible reading is one of the most important Christian disciplines, but unfortunately, research continues to show that consistent Bible reading remains a challenge for many Christians.

Immerse: The Bible Reading Experience is designed to overcome that challenge and help you, your small group, and your church experience the Bible together in a unique and powerful way. Immerse is a true reading Bible. It removes distractions, like chapter and verse breaks, that can slow and complicate Bible reading. It presents the full text of the Bible in the New Living Translations (NLT) in six editions.

Immerse: Messiah is a great place to start. By following the exclusive 40-day Lenten reading plan (download available on Immerse for Lent website) your group will read through every book of the New Testament by Easter Sunday.

The Immerse group format is different from a typical Bible study. There are no DVD curricula and no workbooks. As a host, your main responsibility is to simply facilitate conversation and help the group run smoothly. Here are the three steps you can take to start and host your own Immerse Bible reading group:

Step 1: Pick Your Group

Groups with 8-12 work best. It can be people in your current small group from church, but it’s also a great opportunity to kick off a new small group or invite friends, coworkers, or neighbors who might be open to a short commitment in a more casual “book club” Bible discussion.

Step 2: Read the Bible

Follow the assigned reading your group decides upon. The Immerse for Lent reading plan has six days of reading each week, which is about 20 to 30 minutes of reading each day. More recommended reading plan options can be found on the Immerse website, so your group can decide the reading schedule that fits best.

Step 3: Meet and Discuss

Like any book club, discussion is when the most fun and learning happens. Have your group meet for at least 60 minutes each week. It can be in person or online, however your group is most comfortable. Create your own discussion questions or use the recommended conversation starters found in the Immerse Quick Start Guide.

These group experiences set the table for authentic, free-flowing conversations about Scripture and could be a life-changing experience. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2.
